Sutter's Long-Held Commitment to
Sacramento

As a not-for-profit, community-based health system, Sutter Medical Center does not return profits to shareholders. Rather, we reinvest our earnings into the communities we serve by providing charity care, supporting community benefit programs and absorbing the unpaid cost of public programs like Medicare and Medi-Cal. Our hospitals provide medical services to Sacramento and Northern California residents seven days a week, 24 hours a day and our emergency departments are open to everyone who needs care – regardless of their ability to pay.

We also know that the best way to create community health isn’t always within hospital walls. Through collaboration with other health systems and not-for-profit community agencies, we are able to support many programs providing services to the uninsured and underinsured population. In addition, Sutter Medical Center supports local not-for-profit agencies, community-based organizations and government-sponsored programs through cash and in-kind support. In 2005, Sutter Medical Center invested $118 million into charity care and community benefit programs to help serve those without health insurance and Sacramento’s underserved communities.

The services we provide touch every part of our community -- from the tiniest premature newborn to our most elderly citizens. We plan to continue this mission for decades to come.
