Rehabilitation
Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento

To ensure the best possible recovery and maximum range of motion, patients undergoing repair of bones, joints, ligaments and tendons or total joint replacement surgery must take an active role in their rehabilitation program. Physical therapy helps to increase circulation and provide maximum range of motion by preventing scar tissue from forming and restricting motion. Working with a physical therapist also helps patients strengthen the muscles supporting the joints and bones to improve function and prevent further injury.

During a patient’s hospital stay, Sutter physical therapists will visit daily to help patients move the affected area and teach patients the proper ways to get in and out of bed and perform other functions to prevent falls or other injuries. Prior to hospital discharge, the orthopaedic team prepares a personalized rehabilitation program designed to match the needs and abilities of each patient, providing a long-term plan the patient can use to restore optimum function.

After leaving the hospital, patients continue to receive rehabilitation care through Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento’s Outpatient Rehabilitation program and also take part in a home program of exercise to increase strength, mobility and range of motion. It’s important to remember that patients who achieve the best results are those who actively participate in their rehabilitation program and follow instructions to prevent accidents and injuries.
